  • Below is a list of Frequently Asked Questions and answers about our industry, how to use our patterns, shipping questions, website questions, and more.
    Q. What is the difference between a plan and a pattern?
    A.
A plan is a set of instructions on how to do a project. They will show how pieces go together, give dimensions of each piece, etc. Patterns, on the other hand, are actual size and are used to trace the project onto your wood. Patterns will also have easy-to-follow instructions on how a project goes together, as well as a simple, paint-by-number scheme.

    Q. Which Staking Kit do I need for my project, and how many?
    A.
A good rule of thumb: If a project is around 55" or smaller in height, a Sherwood Staking Kit will be needed. A small or large staking kit will be needed, based on the size of the project. The quantity should be 1 kit for every 2 feet wide the project is. Use the Small Project Staking Kit (H-672) for projects around 36" high or smaller. Use the Large Project Staking Kit (H-675) for projects around 55" high or smaller.

    Q. Do you offer a starter kit, to see if I will even like doing this type of thing?
    A.
Yes. It is ITEM# SK-101 and includes everything you need to do your first project. You get Paint, Brushes, Stylus, Tracing Paper, Pattern, Pre-cut Wood of a Cute Dog Project, and Sherwood’s Own How-To Booklet (taking you from start to finish) ALL for ONLY $19.95

    Q. Can I get a discount for buying more than one plan or pattern?
    A.
Yes. There are several ways to get discounts. One way is to look for items sold as sets. These will be either items in the catalog that are shown together and can be purchased as a set, or links to the sets while viewing them on our website. Discounts are given to those who purchase an entire set of 2, 3, or 4 patterns that make up the sets. You may save as much as $1 or $2 per pattern, when you purchase in this manner. Another way to get discounts is to look for Sale Items. These will be marked in both the catalog and on our website, and can be as high as 50% OFF the regular prices. We also many other discount offers throughout the year, both in our catalog and our website. Check back on a regular basis for these special deals!

    Q. Do most projects require any special tools or supplies to do?
    A.
Yes and no. Some people like to use fancy scroll saws and the like, but our projects can be done with a simple, inexpensive jig saw. We suggest certain types of outdoor wood glues to keep your projects from coming apart in the weather. See our supplies for what we have to offer. If you are doing a project from a pattern, you will need some tracing paper, which we offer (ITEM# P8), some wood screws, nails, hammer, drill, drill bits, etc., but nothing out of the ordinary. In order to paint your project, you will want to look at the color picture of what you are purchasing to see what paints you will want to use, or inquire with us to see what we suggest you use for each pattern you would like to purchase. Other than that, you might want to use some sand paper, and maybe a router to make the edges of your project a little nicer. Anyone can do our projects!

    Q. Can I order 24/7?
    A.
Yes. You can either give us a call at 1-800-843-2571, or purchase online anytime.

    Q. What types of credit cards do you accept?
    A.
    VISA, MasterCard, and Discover.

    Q. How often are new plans and patterns offered to the public?
    A.
We put out about 50-100 new plans and patterns about every 3 months (every new printed catalog).

    Q. Should I primarily use screws, nails, wood glue, or a combination on my projects?
    A.
On smaller-weight projects, use wood glue and nails; on larger-weight or heavier joints, use wood screws and wood glue. In both situations, glue first, clamp the pieces together, and then either nail or screw together (allowing to dry while clamped).

Check this page often, as others will be added on a regular basis, and as customers ask additional questions that we feel should be shared here.
